Apprenticeship profiles

Alex Thistlethwaite

Alex reveals the best thing about the scheme:

The best thing about the apprenticeship scheme is meeting new people. There are so many characters, and I know I’ll never lose touch with some of them. There are also endless opportunities for sports and activities, everything from rugby and cricket to ultimate frisbee and beach ball. And there are always other events and courses being organised by the staff and students like paintball, scuba diving, skydiving and go-karting - some things that you’ll never have the opportunity to do again. A group of us also got the opportunity to take the Duke of Edinburgh silver award.

The transformation from the person you are on the first day to the person you become at the end of your first year is amazing. You become a more rounded person, and learn how to deal with people in lots of different situations. I’ve certainly grown in confidence and you can see it in other people as they become more mature – it’s strange how fast you grow up when you’re living hundreds of miles away from home.

The team building activities are brilliant and you can put them into practice in real life situations. The academic work is also interesting, and you learn many principles of basic engineering, and get to do practical work as well. The ILM course is also good because you learn about people management and how to become a leader. In all, the whole experience at Gosport was brilliant and I recommend it to anybody.
