Signalling
It's your signal. You'll keep it working and help keep millions
of people safe. And you'll do it every day.
There are thousands of signals across our network. And every day
we are checking, testing, cleaning and fixing signals throughout
the country. It involves integrated electronic control centres,
panel signal boxes and manual lever frame boxes. The work is varied
and highly important – and ranges from checking signals and testing
circuits to fixing faults that need urgent attention.
The signalling systems play a critical role in our network. They
oversee the safe spacing of trains and make sure trains switch from
one track to another; they alert signallers to train movements,
warn drivers and stop trains automatically.
As ever, the work is critical and is always conducted with the
highest levels of safety in mind. And of course you need to be
prepared to work shifts too.
