Your career

Once you become experienced and competent as a track technician, there are a number of career options open to you.

You could become a supervisor, leading a team with responsibility for the inspection, planning and maintenance of a section of track. Or you could become a technical specialist. Often good supervisors and technical specialists move on to become engineers and get more involved in surveys, assessing the condition of track through analysis and general track management.

Working in track often involves making judgements based on experience and know-how. And because you could be tackling a problem that you may not have come across before, it's always important to work together to decide on the best solution.

Further down the line, there could also be the possibility of working on major projects and becoming a project engineer or manager.
