Our Work
Network Rail is responsible for keeping everyone and everything
moving. Whenever you make a journey by train, pass through a
station or use something that's been transported by rail freight,
we've made it possible. We run enough track to take you to China
and back (twice). We maintain and improve signals, tunnels,
bridges, viaducts and level crossings. We own 2,500 stations and
manage some of the largest and busiest ones in Britain.
Right now, 1.3 billion journeys are made on the railway every
year, and the number of passengers just keeps on growing (by 40% in
the last 10 years). We want to continue to meet customer needs,
while providing even better value for money in the future. It's
ambitious, complex and extremely challenging. And we're investing
some £35bn to make sure it happens.
The projects we're delivering are some of the largest in Europe
today. Thameslink, Crossrail and the redevelopment of King's Cross
and Birmingham New Street stations (among many, many others) all
have one aim. To increase capacity so that more trains can run.
It takes around 35,000 people to meet our promises to the people
of Britain. The graduates who join us enjoy immediate involvement
in major projects and initiatives. Every year we're amazed by their
ideas, passion and commitment, as they tailor their skills and
enjoy world-class development, delivering the railway that the
nation deserves.
