Assistant Electronics Engineer (Test Engineer)

About Technical Services

Provide Network Rail and the rail industry with safe, operational testing and trialling for track machines, infrastructure, equipment and new and modified technology. They deliver specialist engineering, asset management, systems analysis, modelling and rail test development services. The team develop robotics, design tools and new technologies as well as designing, developing and manufacturing the high-performance switch system point operation equipment. Working closely with the route​​s, regions, central functions and industry colleagues to improve the experience of our passengers and freight users.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for the assembly, calibration and testing of the electronics equipment used in Point Operating Equipment (POE) that is distributed across the UK for use in the live railway. This high performing POE system provides the mechanical means that allows trains to move from one track to another; lock the rails in place and then communicate it is safe for trains to pass via our signalling systems. You will adhere to the appropriate standards in operating, quality assurance, environment and safety procedures. You will assist with the development of electronic control units and write technical reports and test specifications. This role is essential to the Rail Industry, it is paramount that our services run safely and efficiently.

Main Responsibility

  • Assembly, calibration and testing of electronics equipment within the Electronics Control Unit (ECU) of the Point Operating Equipment.
  • Fault-finding, repair and test of electronics equipment.
  • Meet operating, quality, environment and safety standards
  • Write technical reports and test specifications

The Ideal Candidate

  • Electrical / Electronic HNC/HND or equivalent qualification/experience
  • Experience as technician/tester within an engineering role
  • Knowledge of analogue and digital circuits and able to interpret complex circuit schematics
  • Good written & verbal communication skills, ability to articulate technical information and good computer literacy
  • Proven customer focus with flexibility to respond rapidly to customer demands

What could set you apart

  • Appreciation of safety critical requirements and responsibilities
  • Understanding of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) for electronics equipment
  • Schematic/PCB design experience using CAD tools
  • Knowledge of Field Programmable Gate Array Logic (FPGA) technology and VHDL language
  • Some experience of electro-mechanical actuation systems/ mechanisms

Salary range: Band 5 £32,000 £35,000

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Units 1 & 2, Red Lodge, Warleys Lane, Weston-Super-Mare, BS24 7TN
