IT Infrastructure Manager [Database & Middleware]

Job Introduction

This role sits in Route Services, a business area that has been created to supply services to the routes in the safest, most cost-efficient and effective way, enabling them to benefit from economies of scale and optimised national resources.

Working in the IT Services Team, you will provide our customers with smart technology for the railway of today, designing fit-for-purpose and innovative solutions. Your vital work will help to manage the day-to-day running of our vast IT estate, from safety critical systems maintenance to hardware provision, supporting thousands of employees every day.

Main Responsibility

You will own the maintenance, improvement, development  and cost effective provision of one of the technical towers (end user computing, Platform and storage, Databases and middleware, ERP) within Network Rail. 

What will you be doing?

  1. Provide technology leadership for tower to delivery and operations.
  2. Maintain effective relationships with suppliers and third parties driving value from contracts.
  3. Collaborating closely across all associated platform areas removing barriers and driving a customer focused seamless service.
  4. Responsible for managing and developing suitable policies and procedures to deliver efficient and cost effective service.
  5. Maintain delivery of the services in accordance to industry best practice (e.g. ITIL) and develop tools and techniques that will sustain continual service improvement of all delivered services.
  6. Manage delivery in accordance with agreed SLA / OLA contracts. Provide recommendation for change modification where necessary.
  7. Provide detailed knowledge of specific skills area to support operational and strategic planning as part of the overall team.
  8. On an annual basis provide a Unit plan which identifies targeted areas for cost savings.  Provide period reports of actual savings against target.

  • Educated to degree level or relevant experience
  • Experience in IT Service Management.
  • Strong leadership and organisational skills
  • Good presentation skills
  • Proven track record in Operational Support area.
  • Able to understand and extract salient information from complex documentation.
  • Knowledge of key performance measures and practical experience of using these to drive performance improvement. 
  • Excellent people skills with exposure to the full range of people management practices. 
  • Commercially and politically aware

Package Description

Vacancy Type: Full-time but flexible working patterns will be considered.

Band & Salary:  3C (£51,156 - £57,551)
