Logistics Operative

Route Services is a division of Network Rail, formed to provide our routes with services and supplies that they need in order to maintain and deliver a better railway for a better Britain. This opportunity sits in Supply Chain Operations (SCO), a division of Route Services that procures safe, sustainable, products and services that are in turn used to improve and enhance the rail infrastructure across Britain. SCO aims to deliver excellent value and service to our customers, helping the rail industry to work together to deliver a more cost-effective railway.

Our extensive supply chain network plays a crucial role in helping to run a safe and efficient railway.

Every year we:

  • Buy and deliver 2,000km of rail and 2.5 million tonnes of ballast.
  • Operate 1,200 rail vehicles.

Behind the scenes we:

  • Process £7,000,000,000 of payments.
  • Handle over 23,000 IT helpdesk calls.

Every year:

  • Mechanical and electrical locking fitters maintain 468 signal boxes and 387 ground frames.
  • Operational property helpdesk process over 200,000 calls.

 

Main Responsibility

  • Assist in the provision of a safe and effective logistical support service to the facility to meet all user requirements with handling product deliveries, stock movements, depot plant and equipment positioning and depot waste management controls. 
  • Undertake all rail vehicle movements in and out of the site confines. Conduct all rail vehicle movements in compliance with company policies and statutory regulations.
  • Manage the day-to-day control and operation of site traversers, mobile plant and associated equipment.
  • Support and undertake routine maintenance, repairs and safety checks to keep logistical assets fit for purpose. Raise any faults or defects and follow up their rectification.
  • Coordinate and undertake the movements of modules and assets to meet all user requirements in compliance with company policies and statutory regulations.
  • Assist in the management and control of the depot internal and external storage areas to maximise storage and meet requestor requirements.
  • Responsible for maintaining the site and its storage areas in a safe, secure and orderly manner.
  • Assist with the control, management and maintenance of lifting tackle so that all equipment can be identified as having been inspected and is fit for use.
  • Manage and operate the depot fuel, gas and chemical stores in compliance with company policies and statutory regulations.
  • Assist in identifying and implementing quality and efficiency improvement initiatives.

The Ideal Candidate

Will have experience in the following:

Essential Criteria

  • Experienced and certificated in rail vehicle shunting and the associated rules.
  • Experience of working in an operational rail fleet facility.
  • Good knowledge of relevant health & safety and environment regulations.

Desirable

  • Experience in Forklift driving, stacking on stores racking and lorry offloading. 
  • Holder of shunting equipment and associated equipment competencies.
  • Trained in slinging and crane operations.
  • Good communication and organisation skills.
  • Team player.

This position is based at our York Holgate Depot.

Salary range: £24,500 per annum.
