As a Scheme Project Manager, you will assist the Transpennine Route Upgrade by managing a schedule/design programme, addressing challenges and issues as they arise, and effectively communicating with both external and internal stakeholders. You will be responsible for delivering your own project package in support of the Project Manager, working independently while supporting the broader team. This role offers valuable exposure to commercial and contract management within a hub-and-spoke contracting environment.

Drugs & Alcohol test: All prospective candidates offered a conditional role will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Salary: £43,588 to £49,037 per annum

This role can be based in the following locations: York, Leeds or Manchester

Main Responsibility

Some of the key accountabilities of this role are:

1.             Work alongside a team of Project professionals to ensure our outputs are delivered in a safe & environmentally responsible manner to time, cost, and quality and in accordance with PACE and TRU Governance

2.             Promote safety and follow Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations.

3.             Identify and monitor project risks (threats and opportunities), plan and implement mitigations to them, and respond to other issues that affect the project

4.             Manage multi-disciplinary teams including commercial, programme controls, engineering, and others to identify solutions to client requirements and establish a robust baseline plan.

5.             Monitor the design process ensuring design solutions are met and efficiencies are driven.

6.             Managing project reviews at appropriate points throughout the project lifecycle which will inform governance decisions of projects by providing evaluations of progress, performance, risk, contingency, and continuing relevance

7.             Support the Project Manager in effective budget management and change control

8.             Support accident investigations when remitted to by the relevant designated competent person.

9.             Comply with the Investment Competence Framework.

10.          Support the project Sponsor in preparing and maintaining definitions of the project requirements

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a proactive problem-solving approach, ensuring the project stays on course. With a professional demeanour and keen attention to detail, you’ll navigate complexities while maintaining quality and compliance.

Whilst railway experience is desirable, we welcome applications from aspiring Project Managers with transferrable skills and demonstrable experience which would support you in delivering a variety of projects such as Tunnel upgrades, station remodeling and electrification of lines.

We need you to have:

·       Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience

·       Membership (or working towards membership) of the Association for Project Management

·       Achieved PRINCE2 Foundation or equivalent

·       Good stakeholder engagement and communication skills

·       Successful relevant experience including experience of contracting and project delivery

·       Knowledge and experience of project budget management

·       Good evaluation and decision-making skills

·       Project safety management and Health and Safety legislation knowledge

·       Knowledge safety cases in support of projects

It would be advantageous if you have:

·       Experience in the Rail Industry Sector (including application of PACE, and Construction Design Management (CDM) on simple projects)

·       Design and delivery experience

·       Knowledge of Network Rail’s Project, Investment, Commercial and Procurement practices

·       Experience in risk identification, assessment and mitigation

·       Flexible and pro-active approach

·       You will be a team player with willingness to learn, challenge and get involved

·        Knowledge of Network Rail’s assets and how they are managed

Role: Scheme Project Manager (CD) x 5 roles

Salary: £43,588 to £49,037 per annum

Location: York, Leeds or Manchester

Contract Type: Full time, permanent

Office Requirement: 2 – 3 days per week office based, the rest of the time would be working remotely

Transpennine Route Upgrade

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a multi-billion pound Programme, one of the largest rail enhancement projects in the UK, improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.

​​​Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 29 level crossings.
