Main Responsibility

 Network Rail owns and operates its own dedicated Command and Control digital radio system, based on the legally mandated GSM-R / EIRENE specifications. The system was installed between 2002 and 2012 and is likely to be in operation until the late 2030s, and possibly beyond. The system supports both operational voice and data services, and in areas where ETCS has been deployed, failure results in trains being unable to move. The system contributed to saving lives and has enabled the railway to continue to raise levels of safety and performance.

The posts being advertised are within the Asset and Architecture group which sits within the newly formed DDaT directorate. The primary role of the team is to manage the GSM-R system requirements and strategic vision across three primary areas;

•             Operational Voice – primarily Train to Track

•             System Engineering & Assurance

•             Radio and Access Technology

Each of the three roles will act as a specialist within one of the three core areas identified. The successful candidate in each area will need a good working knowledge of both the legal framework in which the system operates and an understanding of system deployment within the UK rail environment.

Responsibilities of the group include the development of system strategies, asset roadmaps and service assurance and evolution plans to help ensure the system continues to deliver it’s vital safety and performance function whilst also leveraging additional capabilities. The work will include interaction with both internal and external bodies responsible for the standards that govern system deployment and use, with the aim of progressing towards becoming a Subject Matter Expert.

The group will also have responsibility for the management of the Technical File, aspects of System Safety Management, and Product Approval, and awareness of the processes that operate in these areas would be beneficial.

The roles will play a significant part of the development of asset management strategies and policies associated with the service and asset development of GSM-R and its successor systems and the development of system assurance plans.
