Senior Testing Engineer

About Technical Services

Provide Network Rail and the rail industry with safe, operational testing and trialling for track machines, infrastructure, equipment and new and modified technology. They deliver specialist engineering, asset management, systems analysis, modelling and rail test development services. The team develop robotics, design tools and new technologies as well as designing, developing and manufacturing the high-performance switch system point operation equipment. Working closely with the route​​s, regions, central functions and industry colleagues to improve the experience of our passengers and freight users.

The Signalling Engineering and Innovations team provide signalling and systems engineering and innovation support to delivery and engineering teams with the aim of improving safety, reliability, quality, value for money and efficiency within Network Rail and the supply chain.

What will you be doing?

This role sits within our Technical Services function and is within our Signalling Engineering and Innovation team. In the role as a Senior Engineer, you will provide technical engineering input in addition to support and advice across the Signalling discipline within Network Rail.

More specifically, you will develop and provide support for existing and new signalling and multi-disciplinary design tools providing training, mentoring and technical support to users. As part of the role, you will create and develop engineering standards, work instructions and guidance documents. In addition, you will provide project and product technical support for a range of Signalling Engineering Innovations. 

Main Responsibility

  • Lead and direct the Signal Works Testing team to achieve business and functional objectives and meet key performance measures.
  • Deliver a specific programme of work, on time and to budget in accordance with Network Rail standards.
  • Manage the development of work plans that enables work to be delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Develop, establish, and adapt the competency and skill levels of the team, so that adequate resources are in place to meet changing business and customer requirements.
  • Develop lasting relationships with key stakeholders to develop and grow the work bank
  • Manage the processes and acceptances required for Signal Works Testing activities.
  • Undertake a programme of staff surveillance and check that the quality of work delivered is compliant to standards.

This role can is based in Birmingham Baskerville house however supports the NW&C and W&W regions.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Hold an IRSE Engineering Manager Licence or be registered with the Engineering Council at IEng or CEng level
  • Experience of managing and directing a team.
  • Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team
  • Knowledge of budget management and cost/waste control processes and techniques
  • Knowledge of safety and compliance management processes
  • Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills

Package Description

Role Title: Senior Testing Engineer

Salary range: £53,202 - £59,853

Contract Type: 6 month FTC with opportunity to be extended/made permanent

Location: Birmingham
